Forestry Worker (Harvesting)

Harvesting forestry workers work in forestry crews to cut and clear trees from forests.

 

Tasks & duties

Harvesting forestry workers may do some or all of the following:

  • clear the bush and undergrowth and cut escape routes
  • use bulldozers to clear bush and undergrowth
  • select trees to be cut down
  • decide the best way to cut the trees 
  • fell (cut down) trees
  • attach cables to the logs
  • operate the harvesting machinery which drags the logs from the bush
  • remove branches from logs using an automated mechanical processor and a de-limber or chainsaw
  • operate loaders to move logs into stacks or to load trucks
  • assess the quality of logs
  • measure and cut logs
  • maintain and repair chainsaws and equipment

 

Skills & knowledge

Harvesting forestry workers need to have:

  • knowledge of tree and timber types 
  • knowledge of tree felling, cutting and trimming methods 
  • an understanding of health and safety requirements in the forest, including first aid skills 
  • chainsaw operation and maintenance skills 
  • mechanical skills 
  • heavy vehicle handling skills 
  • fire-fighting skills 
  • decision-making skills

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific requirements to become a harvesting forestry worker as skills are gained on the job.

 

Secondary education

There are no specific secondary education requirements, but NCEA Level 1 (or equivalent) Maths and English are seen as an advantage by most employers.

 

Tertiary education

You can take an introductory courses in chainsaw use and forest harvesting practices at a number of polytechnics. Half or full-year Certificates in Logging or Forest Harvesting are also available.

 

Training on the job

Harvesting forestry workers can attend courses or complete NZQA unit standards in forest harvesting-related skills such as chainsaw operation and operating a harvesting machine. National certificates in forestry harvesting can be completed while working. For further information contact FITEC.

Useful experience for harvesting forestry workers includes:

  • work planting, pruning and thinning trees
  • timber mill work
  • work as a volunteer fire-fighter
  • experience driving heavy vehicles
