Miller (Grain)

Grain millers control and operate machinery to mix, mill and treat grains and by-products to produce flour or stock feed.

 

Tasks & duties

Grain millers may do some or all of the following:

  • clean and prepare the grain for milling
  • start the flow of grain through the milling machinery
  • keep the grain moving
  • operate the sifting and grinding equipment during the milling process
  • take samples to check the quality of products
  • make sure the quality is consistent
  • check the bagging of products
  • check the quantities of raw materials used and the quantities that are in storage
  • complete forward planning by assessing the amount of products in stock, and the amount that will be needed for orders
  • ensure the plant remains clean and hygienic
  • do minor repairs on milling equipment

 

Skills & knowledge

Grain millers need to have:

  • knowledge of grain varieties
  • knowledge of milling methods and equipment
  • basic computer skills to operate and control machinery
  • knowledge of the effects of chemicals on grain
  • knowledge of health and safety regulations
  • technical and practical skills

 

Entry requirements

To become a grain miller you need to have Sixth Form Certificate or NCEA equivalent in maths, English and science. As there are no grain miller courses in New Zealand, most people complete the London City and Guilds courses through distance learning.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job and some companies may pay for their millers to complete London City and Guilds courses.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for millers includes bakery, electrical and laboratory work, or work in the engineering side of an industry.
