Brewery Worker
Tasks & duties

Brewery workers may do some or all of the following:
-
operate computerised machinery that controls the brewing process
-
analyse beer using laboratory equipment such as a spechophotometer, which measures the bitterness and colour of beer
-
write reports on beer production and identify any operational problems
-
do stock counts and order ingredients
-
clean and sterilise the machinery, tanks and the production area
-
fill kegs and tankers with beer
-
ensure the machines wash, label and fill bottles correctly
-
use a machine to pack bottles into crates or cartons
-
drive a fork-lift
Skills & knowledge
Brewery workers need to have:
-
a knowledge of beer production methods
-
a knowledge of the technical and scientific processes that produce beer
-
a knowledge of quality control methods
-
an ability to diagnose and solve problems
-
good technical skills, including machine operation and maintenance
-
an understanding of hygiene and sterilisation
-
maths and computer skills
-
good communication skills
Entry Requirements
To become a brewery worker, most employers prefer that you have at least three years of secondary education. Useful subjects include maths, English, computer studies and science, especially chemistry.
Training on the job
Brewery workers can work towards national certificates in food and related products processing or in mechanical engineering through Competenz.
Brewery workers can also do the following courses through The Institute of Brewing and Distilling:
- General Certificate in Brewing
- General Certificate in Beer Packaging
Diploma in Brewing Examination, which is a globally recognised qualification that generally takes three years through distance learning
