Street/Park Cleaner

Street/park cleaners sweep and clean streets, gutters, footpaths, and other public areas such as parks and car parks. They may also clear the sides of roads in rural areas, and are responsible for keeping ditches and culverts clear of debris.

 

Tasks & duties

Street/park cleaners may do some or all of the following:

  • sweep footpaths and gutters with a broom or sweeper-truck
  • shovel dirt and rubbish onto the truck
  • use water-flushing equipment to clear gutters and unblock street drains
  • clean footpaths and tiled surfaces, often using hand-operated or ride-on machinery
  • cut growth away from the roads and footpaths
  • clear away slips and fallen trees
  • empty litter bins
  • maintain public toilets and street furniture
  • clear and maintain street water sumps (drains)
  • remove graffiti and posters from places such as walls and park benches
  • clear logs, litter and seaweed from beaches
  • maintain gardens
  • check and monitor security problems around the city/town
  • give people directions

 

Skills & knowledge

Street/park cleaners need to have:

  • knowledge of how to use and care for their machinery and cleaning equipment
  • a thorough understanding of safety procedures
  • familiarity of the streets and parks in the areas where they are working
  • the ability to operate machinery and drive a variety of vehicles including heavy trucks
  • organisational skills and the ability to prioritise daily tasks

 

Entry requirements

To become a street/park cleaner you need to have a current driver's licence. It is also preferred that you have a Heavy Trade licence.

Secondary education

There are no specific educational requirements to become a street/park cleaner, but two years of secondary education is preferred and a useful subject is English.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. Street/park cleaners may also attend courses in first aid, health and safety, and dealing with the public.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for street/park cleaners includes:

  • forestry and farm work
  • driving heavy vehicles
  • work on construction sites
  • experience cleaning with solvents
