Street/Park Cleaner
Tasks & duties

Street/park cleaners may do some or all of the following:
-
sweep footpaths and gutters with a broom or sweeper-truck
-
shovel dirt and rubbish onto the truck
-
use water-flushing equipment to clear gutters and unblock street drains
-
clean footpaths and tiled surfaces, often using hand-operated or ride-on machinery
-
cut growth away from the roads and footpaths
-
clear away slips and fallen trees
-
empty litter bins
-
maintain public toilets and street furniture
-
clear and maintain street water sumps (drains)
-
remove graffiti and posters from places such as walls and park benches
-
clear logs, litter and seaweed from beaches
-
maintain gardens
-
check and monitor security problems around the city/town
-
give people directions
Skills & knowledge

Street/park cleaners need to have:
-
knowledge of how to use and care for their machinery and cleaning equipment
-
a thorough understanding of safety procedures
-
familiarity of the streets and parks in the areas where they are working
-
the ability to operate machinery and drive a variety of vehicles including heavy trucks
-
organisational skills and the ability to prioritise daily tasks
Entry requirements
To become a street/park cleaner you need to have a current driver's licence. It is also preferred that you have a Heavy Trade licence.

Secondary education
There are no specific educational requirements to become a street/park cleaner, but two years of secondary education is preferred and a useful subject is English.
Training on the job
Skills are gained on the job. Street/park cleaners may also attend courses in first aid, health and safety, and dealing with the public.

Useful experience for street/park cleaners includes:

driving heavy vehicles

work on construction sites

experience cleaning with solvents
