Assembler (Electric and Electronic Goods)
Tasks & duties

Electric and electronic goods assemblers may do some or all of the following:
-
follow the assembly instructions
-
choose the correct component and amount of each component needed
-
place the parts into position on the circuit board
-
wire components
-
punch or drill holes in the parts to be assembled
-
solder the parts to the circuit board
-
check that each component is in the correct place
-
test the assembled equipment to make sure it works properly
-
make any modifications required
-
put the circuit board into the casing of the product
-
pack the finished electric/electronic products
-
service and operate computer-controlled systems that perform assembly tasks
Skills & knowledge

Electric and electronic goods assemblers need to have:

knowledge of electrical/electronic components and equipment

the ability to interpret circuit board diagrams

practical skills

basic maths skills for making calculations and measurements

knowledge of safety rules and procedures

Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements to become an electric and electronic goods assembler as skills are gained on the job.
Secondary education
Three years of secondary education is preferred. Useful subjects include maths, science, computer studies, English, and electronics related subjects.
Training on the job
Electric and electronic goods assemblers can complete an apprenticeship and gain a National Certificate in Electronic Manufacturing, with strands in Manufacturing Technology and Manufacturing Leadership, or a National Certificate in Electronic Manufacturing through ETITO and then a technician level certificate.
