Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. All NZ Army recruits need to complete the 12-week All Arms Recruit Course (AARC) at Waiouru Military Camp before training for their specific trade.

Army crewmen must then complete the Regular Force Infantry Corps training at Burnham military camp. After Corps training, more advanced trade training and courses are conducted in Waiouru at the Combat School.

Once Corps training is completed, crewmen are posted to either 1st Battalion, RNZIR at Linton Military Camp or 2nd/1st Battalion at Burnham Military Camp. Army crewmen train on the Light Armoured Vehicles (the NZLAV) as a gunner, driver and eventually a crew commander.

Useful experience

Training in the Territorial Force, work in a team environment, or work as a mechanic is useful. A Heavy Trade licence is also helpful.
