Vehicle Groomer/Cleaner

Vehicle groomers and cleaners wash, vacuum, clean and polish the outside and inside of vehicles.

 

Tasks & duties

Vehicle groomers/cleaners may do some or all of the following:

  • vacuum the inside of the vehicle
  • shampoo the seats, carpet and roof lining
  • clean the door jambs and rubber seals
  • clean the plastic work inside the vehicle
  • remove insects and tar from the vehicle's body work
  • clean the vehicle's tyres, wheels, wheel-arches and mudflaps
  • steam-clean the engine, boot, door sills and outside of the vehicle
  • remove small scratches from the vehicle
  • wash, rinse and dry the outside of the vehicle
  • clean the bumper trim, side mouldings and grill
  • clean and polish the windows
  • hand polish the outside of the vehicle
  • buff the vehicle using a rotary buff
  • straighten any dents in the number plates
  • fit boot spoilers, side skirts and mudflaps to vehicles
  • blacken the tyres
  • do a final, detailed clean and check
  • drive the vehicle to and from workshops, clients' workplaces or clients' homes

 

Skills & knowledge

Vehicle groomers/cleaners need to have:

  • good knowledge of vehicles
  • knowledge of cleaning equipment and substances and how to use them safely
  • knowledge of paint technology
  • knowledge of different skills and techniques required for different paints
  • customer service skills
  • cleaning skills

 

Business management skills may also be useful for vehicle groomers/cleaners who run their own business.

 

Entry requirements

To become a vehicle groomer/cleaner you need to have a full driver's licence.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job, and vehicle groomers/cleaners can complete a National Certificate in Vehicle Grooming. For further information contact the New Zealand Motor Industry Training Organisation (MITO).

 

Useful experience

Experience as a cleaner or working with cars, particularly in paint or panel work, may be useful for vehicle groomers/cleaners.
