Laundry Worker
Tasks & duties

Laundry workers may do some or all of the following:
-
take laundry from customers and record the work to be done
-
check that bundles of laundry contain the articles listed
-
sort articles to be laundered into piles requiring the same treatment
-
weigh or count each load
-
work out the amount of cleaning solution needed
-
select washing machines depending on the size of the load
-
load washing machines and set dials to the correct temperature and time
-
hang articles in a drying room or operate a drying machine
-
iron cleaned laundry
-
fold laundry
-
pack articles to be returned
-
calculate the cost of articles to be laundered
-
fill out account details for commercial washes
-
sell tokens and help customers do their washing in laundries
Skills & knowledge

Laundry workers need to have:
-
knowledge of washing times and temperatures
-
knowledge of starching clothes and material textiles
-
an understanding of soaps and detergents, bleach treatments and stain removers
-
the ability to sort and evaluate articles
-
basic maths skills
-
good organisational skills
-
a good memory
Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements to become a laundry worker, but skills are gained on the job.
Secondary education
There are no specific secondary educational requirements to become a laundry worker, but maths is useful, as cash handling may be involved.
Training on the job
Many skills are gained on the job.
Laundry workers may attend training courses or complete industry certificates while working. Work-based training is avalible through the Apparel and Textile Industry Training Organisation (ATITO).
Useful experience
Experience in the clothing or dry-cleaning industries may be useful for laundry workers. It is also useful if they have had experience working with people and fabrics. Experience in using boiler heaters may be useful for those working in large commercial laundries.
