Tasks & duties

Dry-cleaners may do some or all of the following:

label and sort the items
-
inspect the items for stains
-
spot-clean any stained items with chemicals
-
load, check and start the dry-cleaning machine
-
steam-press the items
-
waterproof or pleat some items
-
finish the items using specialised equipment
-
do repairs and alterations to clothing
-
keep the work area clean and tidy
-
serve customers at the counter
-
deliver items to businesses or private homes
-
do the banking and other bookkeeping tasks
Skills & knowledge
Dry cleaners need to have:
-
knowledge of fabric types and how to care for them
-
knowledge of chemicals and stain removers
-
knowledge of dry-cleaning machines
-
the ability to maintain dry-cleaning machinery
-
expertise in garment mending and altering
-
good communication skills
-
problem-solving and time management skills
Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements for becoming a dry-cleaner as skills are gained on the job.
Training on the job
Skills are gained on the job, and extra training is available through training courses. NZQA (New Zealand Qualifications Authority) registered certificates in dry-cleaning can also be gained while working.
Useful experience
Useful experience for dry-cleaners includes laundry work, clothing retail work and housekeeping.
