Training and Development Manager
Tasks & duties

Training and development managers:

identify and plan for the present and future training needs of their organisations

negotiate and plan training strategies with other managers and external providers
-
oversee the budget for training and work resources such as videos, journals and books
-
work with design and marketing staff to create training videos, posters and other resources
-
develop training solutions
-
oversee the cost-effectiveness of training
-
recommend and plan training sessions to develop staff skills
-
hire and manage training consultants, and negotiate fees and contracts
-
assess the effectiveness of training design and delivery methods
-
prepare and review training policies
-
monitor industry trends such as technology
-
may be part of government or industry committees
Specialisations
Training and development managers may specialise in a specific area such as information technology training, the training of teachers or industry training.
Skills & knowledge

Training and development managers need to have:

knowledge of the structure and role of the organisation, and staff responsibilities

an understanding of performance management, analysis and improvement
-
knowledge of methods and availability of training, particularly in adult education, and the ability to measure its effectiveness
-
understanding of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) framework
-
up-to-date knowledge of trends in training and development
-
understanding of equal employment issues, Treaty of Waitangi principles and legislation that affects training such as the Privacy Act
-
training, teaching and group work skills
-
skill in interpreting how business strategies translate into an organisation's development and training strategy

the ability to identify and analyse training needs

leadership skills, including the ability to develop and manage a team

Entry requirements
To become a training and development manager you need to have extensive, relevant work experience in training and development.
Secondary education
A tertiary entrance qualification is needed to become a training and development manager. Useful subjects include English and maths.
Tertiary education
A tertiary qualification in human resources, psychology, training and development, business studies or management is useful.
Training on the job
Many skills are gained on the job. Training and development managers may attend trainer courses, and are required to improve their skills through their employer. They must also keep up to date with the latest practices in training and human resources.
