Staff Training Officer

Staff training officers plan, arrange and may deliver courses for employees of business, government or other organisations.

Staff training officers may do some or all of the following:

  • observe the competency of staff
  • help management to decide on training to benefit the company
  • help individual staff and staff teams decide on their training requirements
  • maintain individual staff training records and evaluate the results of training
  • work with managers to establish and monitor organisations' goals
  • source available training courses
  • recommend and plan training courses
  • undertake administration of courses including arranging venues and hiring/purchasing equipment
  • prepare training materials and resources
  • consider budgets when preparing programmes
  • design training programmes
  • deliver training courses
  • get feedback on the usefulness of training programmes and use the feedback to make improvements
  • report feedback to mangers
  • give co-workers feedback on their training skills

 

Skills & knowledge

Staff training officers need to have:

  • an awareness of different learning styles and training techniques, particularly adult learning techniques
  • knowledge of training and facilitating in groups and one-on-one situations
  • knowledge of office procedures and budgeting
  • an understanding of how business and departments are run and organised
  • excellent people skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people
  • good presentation and teaching skills
  • the ability to analyse information
  • decision-making ability
  • planning and organisational skills
  • computer skills

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to become a staff training officer, but some employers may prefer you to have a certificate in adult learning or a Diploma in Training and Development.

 

Secondary education

A tertiary entrance qualification is needed to enter further training. Useful subjects include English.

 

Tertiary education

A teaching degree, or a tertiary qualification in the area you are interested in working in is useful.

 

Training on the job

Staff training officers may attend seminars, courses and workshops to update their knowledge and skills.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for staff training officers includes:

  • any experience in training or coaching others
  • teaching experience
  • any leadership experience such as within a community organisation
  • personnel work
  • experience in a people-focused role such as counselling
