Recruitment Consultant

Recruitment consultants help match people with jobs. They work with candidates (people looking for work) and clients (employers looking for people to work for them).

Recruitment consultants may do some or all of the following:

  • find and build relationships with clients by phoning and visiting them
  • work with clients to identify job vacancies
  • advertise job vacancies in newspapers and on the Internet
  • interview and profile candidates
  • screen and test candidates
  • phone candidates' referees (such as past employers)
  • reformat a candidate's curriculum vitae (CV)
  • brief candidates about available jobs
  • shortlist candidates for job vacancies and present them to clients
  • arrange job interviews and prepare candidates for these interviews
  • negotiate salaries and contracts for candidates
  • write reports and update databases
  • keep in touch with candidates
  • advise on market trends and salaries

 

Specialisations

Recruitment consultants may specialise in recruiting people for a particular industry area, such as IT, design or business-related industries.

 

Skills & knowledge

Recruitment consultants need to have:

  • knowledge of how organisations work
  • specific knowledge of the industry they are working in
  • a good understanding of the economy and employment legislation
  • writing skills for updating CVs and doing reports about candidates
  • communication and people skills
  • sales and marketing skills
  • organisational and time management skills, including the ability to multi-task

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to become a recruitment consultant, but previous work experience in human resources, sales, marketing, retail or customer service is preferred.

 

Secondary education

There are no specific secondary educational requirements, but a good level of maths and English is important.

 

Tertiary education

A tertiary qualification in business, human resources, sales, marketing, psychology or the arts may be useful.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. Recruitment consultants may attend training courses run by the Recruitment and Consulting Services Association (RCSA).

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for recruitment consultants includes any work dealing with people.
