Joiner

Joiners measure, cut, prepare and assemble timber and timber board products to make interior fittings such as kitchen cabinets, doors, window frames and stairs.

 

Tasks & duties

Joiners may do some or all of the following:

  • discuss clients' requirements
  • study instructions and diagrams
  • draw diagrams for clients
  • quote prices for jobs
  • order materials from suppliers
  • select timber and check it for faults
  • measure and mark the required lengths of timber for cutting
  • cut timber
  • nail, screw or glue pieces of material (usually wood) together
  • trim and sand the finished item
  • cut out and attach laminated bench and cupboard surfaces, such as Melteca and Formica
  • fit finished products, such as kitchen worktops, for clients
  • run their own businesses

Joiners may specialise in a certain type of joinery such as:

  • kitchen cabinets
  • doors
  • window frames
  • stairs

 

Skills & knowledge

Joiners need to have:

  • woodworking and machinery skills 
  • knowledge of how different timbers respond to being cut, glued, filed and sanded 
  • the ability to read plans and understand technical drawing 
  • communication skills to convey ideas to clients and other tradespeople 
  • problem-solving skills 
  • knowledge of safety procedures and first aid 
  • skill caring for joinery equipment
  • basic maths skills

 

Computer skills are helpful, as joiners may use computer software to calculate product specifications and costs of materials. Business skills are also useful if they run their own business.

 

Entry requirements

To become a joiner you need to complete an apprenticeship and gain a National Certificate in Joinery. This involves on-the-job training and attending block courses at polytechnic.

Joinery apprenticeships are part of the Modern Apprenticeships scheme, which is primarily for people aged 16 to 21. 

 

Secondary education

Useful subjects include maths, English, technical drawing, and workshop technology.

 

Training on the job

Joiners gain skills on the job.

 

Useful Experience

Useful experience for joiners includes:

  • draughting
  • carpentry
  • building or construction work
  • any work involving technical plans
