Telecommunications Technician
Tasks & duties

Telecommunications technicians may do some or all of the following:

examine equipment and systems to find and repair faults
-
update and maintain existing equipment
-
test repaired or updated items
-
install and test equipment
-
connect equipment to networks
-
assist with selecting sites for equipment
-
carry out general administration duties
Skills & knowledge

Telecommunications technicians need to have:
-
knowledge of electronics and electrical circuits
-
knowledge of computer software and hardware
-
up-to-date knowledge of new technology, including communication technology, such as the cellular network and Internet
-
basic maths skills
-
knowledge of how to use general tools and testing equipment
-
technical skills
-
problem-solving and analytical skills
-
good communication and people skills
-
a basic knowledge of first aid and health and safety regulations
Entry requirements
To become a telecommunications technician you will be required to work towards a National Certificate in Telecommunications or a National Diploma in Engineering (telecommunications, computer technology, or electrical and electronic) as part of an apprenticeship training scheme. Alternatively you need to demonstrate experience in telecommunications, computing or electronics.

Secondary education
School Certificate or NCEA Level 1 maths, English and science are recommended to enter this job, and computers and electronics are also useful.
Training on the job
A National Certificate in Telecommunications (Level 4) can be gained by doing an apprenticeship, which involves a significant amount of on-the-job learning. Once qualified, on-the-job training continues and may include training on in-house computer systems and specific equipment.
The Institute of Professional Engineers (IPENZ) runs some courses for qualified technicians.
Registration
It is preferred that telecommunications technicians are registered as Electrical Services Technicians (EST) with the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB).

Experience involving hand-eye co-ordination and regular use of tools may be useful.
