Electronics Technician

Electronics technicians service, maintain, test, operate and assist with the production of electronic systems and equipment such as televisions, microwave ovens and telecommunication systems.

 

Tasks & duties

Electronics technicians:

  • help to research all the uses of proposed equipment
  • prepare circuit diagrams, drawings and test models from instructions
  • run tests and record the results
  • ensure safety and design standards are met
  • install, repair, test and maintain equipment
  • may be responsible for ordering and maintaining stock for production

 

 

Skills & knowledge

Electronics technicans need to have:

  • knowledge of electronics theory and practice
  • up-to-date knowledge of electronics technology and research
  • the ability to use and care for electronic equipment
  • good technical skills and an understanding of experimental methods
  • computer skills for designing circuit boards, testing software and using databases
  • basic drawing skills
  • problem-solving skills
  • basic maths skills
  • communication and report writing skills
  • the ability to follow instructions

 

Entry requirements

To become an electronics technician you need a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent diploma or degree.

 

Secondary education

A minimum of NCEA Level 1 or 2 is required to enter the job in most cases. Useful subjects include English, maths, science, physics and technology. Some schools offer electronics as a subject and give students the opportunity to complete units towards the National Certificate in Electronics Technology.

 

Tertiary education

To become and electronics technician you need to have a National Certificate in Electronic Engineering or an equivalent qualification.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. Once you graduate with an engineering qualification, you can participate in an on-the-job training programme with the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ). Training is also available in the Royal NZ Navy.

 

Registration

Some employers prefer that electronics technicians are registered with the Electrical Workers' Registration Board.

 

Useful experience

Previous experience working in electronics, such as working as an electronics assembler is useful for electronics technicians, as is any work where instructions have to be followed.
