Picture Framer

Picture framers cut and assemble frames to enclose paintings, photographs, tapestries, prints, certificates or other objects.

 

Tasks & duties

Picture framers may do some or all of the following:

  • discuss the customer's requirements
  • estimate and quote prices for the work to be done
  • advise the customer on which frame and matt board (coloured borders) will suit their picture
  • choose the framing materials
  • measure the item to be framed and all the parts that make up the frame
  • cut matt board, backing board, glass, frames and any other additional materials
  • join pieces of frame together
  • assemble all the parts to frame the item
  • repair existing framed works
  • buy and sell framed art works
  • advise customers on colour and decor
  • hang framed works in customers' homes or offices
  • order unframed prints and/or sell framing materials and framed items
  • keep records of stock and order more stock when necessary
  • run their own business

 

Skills & knowledge

Picture framers need to have:

  • knowledge of colour and design
  • knowledge of different types of materials and frames
  • knowledge of framing and repairing techniques
  • knowledge of the use and care of equipment
  • art and design skills
  • basic maths skills for doing calculations
  • measuring skills
  • carpentry skills for joining and repairing frames
  • glazing skills for fitting glass into picture frames
  • good communication and customer service skills
  • business management skills if they run their own picture framing business

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to become a picture framer as most training is completed on the job.

 

Secondary education

There are no specific secondary educational requirements for this job, but School Certificate or NCEA equivalent English, maths and art are useful.

 

Tertiary education

Beginners courses in picture framing or general art and craft courses may be a useful starting point for becoming a picture framer.

Professional qualifications in picture framing can be gained by sitting the UK Guild Commended Framer examination. The Guild Commended Framer (GCF) is an internationally recognised picture framing qualification.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for picture framers includes:

  • carpentry work
  • design work
  • work involving tools or machinery
  • courses in design, arts and crafts
  • experience using canvas, such as painting, needlework or tapestry
  • customer service experience
