Optical Instrument Repairer

Optical instrument repairers repair and adjust precise scientific equipment and instruments, and other mechanical instruments such as cameras and microscopes.

 

Tasks & duties

Optical instrument repairers may do some or all of the following:

  • examine items to find the problems
  • consult a manufacturer's manual where necessary
  • remove any damaged parts
  • repair or replace any faulty parts
  • reassemble and adjust items
  • make parts to the right size and shape
  • fit precision lenses, mirrors and parts
  • test the repaired items
  • make or update scientific equipment
  • complete appropriate paperwork and prepare bills for customers

 

Specialisations

Optical instrument repairers may specialise in different types of instruments ranging from personal cameras, surveying instruments, medical and scientific equipment, and film equipment.

 

Skills & knowledge

Optical instrument repairers need to have:

  • knowledge of mechanics, electronics and electrical circuits
  • knowledge of up to date technology and changes manufacturers make in the equipment they work on
  • knowledge of methods of quality control
  • knowledge of the behaviour of light (optics)
  • technical skills
  • good problem-solving skills
  • basic maths skills

 

Entry requirements

To become an optical instrument repairer it is useful to have a diploma or certificate in electronics or engineering. Skills are also learned on the job, and you can train at an optical equipment manufacturing company in New Zealand or overseas.

 

Secondary education

There are no specific secondary education requirements. However, Sixth Form Certificate or NCEA equivalent maths, physics and technical drawing is preferred.

 

Training on the job

Optical instrument repairers can complete short courses in using precision machinery and making parts.

Useful experience for optical instrument repairers includes:

  • jewellery or appliance repair work
  • instrument repair work
  • work with electronics
  • watchmaking and repair work
  • photography
