Hardware Salesperson

Hardware salespeople sell tools and other equipment for use in the home, garden or business.

 

Tasks & duties

Hardware salespeople may do some or all of the following:

  • help customers find what they want
  • advise customers on which products are best suited to their needs
  • order goods
  • check ordered goods against order forms
  • check the condition of the goods
  • price and display goods
  • keep the shop tidy
  • collect payment and wrap purchases
  • arrange lay-by or home delivery
  • supervise other hardware salespeople

 

Skills & knowledge

Hardware salespeople need to have:

  • knowledge of the products they sell
  • good communication and listening skills
  • customer service and sales skills
  • organisational skills and the ability to memorise stock
  • basic maths and computer skills
  • skill in arranging shop displays
  • neat handwriting

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific requirements for becoming a hardware salesperson as most skills are gained on the job.

 

Secondary education

School Certificate or NCEA equivalent English and maths may be useful.

 

Training on the job

Hardware companies often provide training courses for their staff, including retailing and customer service courses and product training sessions with sales representatives.

Modern Apprenticeships are also available for hardware salespeople through the Retail Institute

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for hardware salespeople includes:

  • building or renovating work
  • work dealing with money
  • work with the public
