Clothing Sales Assistant

Clothing sales assistants work in shops selling clothing, fashion accessories and other items that can be worn. They may advise customers on clothing purchases.

 

Tasks & duties

Clothing sales assistants may do some or all of the following:

  • display clothing and fashion accessories
  • fold and iron clothing
  • greet customers as they browse through the clothing racks
  • help customers choose clothing and accessories
  • advise customers on co-ordinating clothing and accessories
  • advise customers on how to take care of clothing
  • collect payment and wrap purchases
  • keep the shop clean and tidy
  • arrange lay-by on clothing and accessories
  • handle customer complaints
  • keep an account of stock
  • help to stocktake and prepare the shop for special sales
  • do the banking
  • deal with sales representatives

 

Skills & knowledge

Clothing sales assistants need to have:

  • knowledge of what stock is available in their shop and how much items cost
  • knowledge of a wide variety of fabrics, fashion and clothing styles
  • the ability to fold, hang, store and care for items in the shop
  • good communication, customer service and sales skills
  • skill in co-ordinating clothes and giving appropriate fashion and style advice to customers
  • the ability to organise space and arrange clothes
  • skills in making calculations, handling cash and using cash registers

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific requirements to become a clothing sales assistant as skills are gained on the job.

 

Secondary education

School Certificate or NCEA equivalent English and mathematics is useful.

 

Tertiary education

A tertiary qualification in sales, customer service or retailing is useful.

 

Training on the job

Employers may send clothing sales assistants on retailing courses and there are often company training courses available. Clothing sales assistants can also complete a retail Modern Apprenticeship. For further information visit the Retail Institute or Modern Apprenticeships websites.

 

Useful experience

Retail or wholesale work, or any experience handling money, may be useful for clothing sales assistants. Work in the clothing industry or as a clothing machinist may also be useful.
