Checkout Operator

Checkout operators use cash registers to work out the total price of customers' purchases, they take payment and give change. They also scan goods to identify prices and pack customers' bags.

 

Tasks & duties

Checkout operators may do some or all of the following:

  • greet customers as they arrive at the checkout
  • weigh goods and swipe them across a scanning device to identify the prices
  • collect payment and give change
  • wrap and pack goods
  • cash up their till at the end of their shift
  • answer customers’ queries
  • stack and display goods on shelves
  • clean around the checkout area

 

Skills & knowledge

Checkout operators need to have:

  • good communication and listening skills
  • the ability to relate well to customers and other staff
  • cash-handling and basic maths skills
  • knowledge of what promotions or special offers are available in their store
  • knowledge of where goods are kept, so they can tell customers how to locate them
  • the ability to pack bags and shelve goods correctly

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to become a checkout operator, but three years of secondary school education is preferred. Useful subjects include English and maths.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job, including full training in operating checkout equipment. A National Certificate in Retail can be completed through the Retail Institute.

Useful experience

Useful experience includes retail or wholesale work. Dealing with customers and cash-handling experience is also helpful.
