Automotive Parts Salesperson

Automotive parts salespeople sell new or used automotive parts and accessories.

 

Tasks & duties

Automotive parts salespeople may do some or all of the following:

  • advise customers on what parts and accessories are needed for vehicles
  • select parts from the storeroom
  • locate and order parts from suppliers
  • sell parts to customers
  • display parts on shelves and keep shop area tidy
  • keep records of all parts being sold and stored
  • pack parts and arrange delivery to customers
  • deliver and pick up parts for customers and other workshops or departments
  • order new parts to maintain stock levels
  • organise advertising and sales promotions
  • carry out other tasks such as banking

 

Skills & knowledge

Automotive parts salespeople need to have:

  • knowledge of vehicles and how they operate
  • up-to-date knowledge of vehicle makes and models, and their parts and accessories
  • knowledge of locating and ordering stock
  • organisational ability and record keeping skills
  • good customer service and sales skills
  • basic maths and computer skills

 

Entry requirements

Although there are no specific educational requirements for becoming an automotive parts salesperson, School Certificate equivalent English and maths is helpful.

 

Training on the job

Automotive parts salespeople can complete the Certificate III in Automotive Sales.This qualification is part of the Automotive Retail, Service and Repair Training Package. It reflects the role of individuals who perform sales-related tasks in the automotive service and repair sector.

 

Useful experience

Experience assembling vehicles, repairing and wrecking vehicles or retail selling is useful  for automotive parts salespeople.
