Rail Transport Careers

The rail transport industry involves the transportation of people and freight by trains throughout New Zealand.
Fork-Lift Operator
Fork-lift operators operate vehicles that have a lifting platform for shifting and stacking heavy articles such as pallets (portable platforms used for storing and moving cargo), bales, crates, containers or cartons.
Locomotive Engineer
Locomotive engineers drive passenger or freight trains.
Railway Shunter
Railway shunters break apart and join the carriages and wagons on trains. They also direct and move freight trains, organise rail freight and conduct safety checks.
Ticket Seller Cashier
Ticket seller cashiers sell tickets and make bookings for a variety of events and attractions such as entertainment, travel or sport.
Train Controller
Train controllers direct and monitor the movement and safe operation of trains within an assigned geographical area.
Train Manager
Train managers are responsible for rail passenger comfort and safety. They also issue tickets and provide passengers with information.
