Paperboard Packaging Printer
Tasks & duties

Paperboard packaging printers may do some or all of the following:
-
receive the printing plates
-
follow the print specifications set out by the client
-
set up the printing machine
-
choose the best type of ink to use
-
load the carton or other type of board for printing
-
carry out printing tests and quality checks
-
check the print job matches the proof provided by the client
-
stack the cardboard and printing materials
-
die cut the cardboard (cut the cardboard into the shape of a box)
-
glue the box together
Skills & knowledge
Paperboard packaging printers need to have:
-
knowledge of the printing process
-
knowledge of colour and design
-
skill in operating print machinery and making minor repairs to equipment
-
an understanding of the basic mechanics of printing machines and measuring systems
-
knowledge of paper, cardboard and other packaging materials
-
communication skills including the ability to work in a team
-
basic maths and computer skills
Entry requirements
An apprenticeship is recommended to become a paperboard packaging printer. To enter an apprenticeship you need to be employed in a print company, pass an eyesight test and have normal colour vision. Details about apprenticeships are available from PrintNZ Training.
Secondary education
Three years of secondary education is preferred, and useful subjects include English and maths.
Training on the job
Skills are gained on the job. Apprentices complete assignments and attend workshops.
Useful experience
Experience working as a printer's labourer or any other work in a printery may be useful.
