Language Careers
The field of languages is made up of a range of jobs that involve the study, translation, interpretation and teaching of languages. This can cover anything from sign language interpreting to work as a linguist at a university.
- Interpreter
- Interpreters convert what people say from one language into another.
- Linguist
- Linguists study the origin, structure, development and use of human language.
- Secondary School Teacher
- Secondary school teachers teach one or more curriculum subject areas to students of approximately 13 to 18 years of age at a secondary school.
- Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
- Teachers of English to speakers of other languages (ESOL teachers) teach people from non-English speaking backgrounds how to speak, read and write in English.
- Tertiary Lecturer
- Tertiary lecturers teach at universities, colleges of education, polytechnics, wānanga and other post-secondary education providers. They may carry out research to be published.
- Translator
- Translators convert written material from one language into another.
