Language Careers

The field of languages is made up of a range of jobs that involve the study, translation, interpretation and teaching of languages. This can cover anything from sign language interpreting to work as a linguist at a university.
Interpreter
Interpreters convert what people say from one language into another.
Linguist
Linguists study the origin, structure, development and use of human language.
Secondary School Teacher
Secondary school teachers teach one or more curriculum subject areas to students of approximately 13 to 18 years of age at a secondary school.
Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Teachers of English to speakers of other languages (ESOL teachers) teach people from non-English speaking backgrounds how to speak, read and write in English.
Tertiary Lecturer
Tertiary lecturers teach at universities, colleges of education, polytechnics, wānanga and other post-secondary education providers. They may carry out research to be published.
Translator
Translators convert written material from one language into another.
