Deep Sea Vessel Manager

Vessel managers plan, organise and co-ordinate the operations and crew of one or more fishing boats.

 

Tasks & duties

  • ensure the crew understand company requirements and catch specifications
  • liaise with crews who are at sea and organise their pay, training and any other requirements
  • establish and apply health and safety regulations for the boat's crew, and ensure environmental standards are met
  • place supply orders so the boat is fully stocked for the next voyage
  • organise repairs and maintenance for boats when in port
  • arrange travel for crew to the port where the boat will be departing from
  • ensure the legal operating status of boats
  • identify where the fish species to be caught is located and help organise the boat's catch plan based on this information
  • source fishing permits and other documentation required for boats fishing in international waters
  • help establish markets for the boat's catch
  • keep and maintain financial records for the vessel and its catch.

 

Skills & knowledge

  • knowledge of fishing quota management
  • knowledge of fishing processes, fish species and their location
  • an understanding of international maritime and environmental laws, and international markets
  • an understanding of employment issues and negotiating skills
  • communication, planning and organisation skills
  • budgeting and accounting skills
  • basic computer skills.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience includes working on deep-sea fishing vessels, and any other management operations or accounting work.

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific requirements to become a vessel manager, but extensive experience in the fishing industry is usually required.

 

Tertiary education

A degree in science or management may be useful.

 

Training on the job

Vessel managers gain skills on the job and are encouraged to participate in on-going training and attend seafood industry conferences. They may attend business management and accounting courses.
