Seafood Factory Supervisor
Tasks & duties

- ensure staff are properly trained and are working safely and efficiently
- ensure hygiene and safety regulations are followed
- make sure production deadlines and requirements are met
- regularly check the quality of the fish
- keep records of factory production
- price and purchase supplies for the factory
- may hire factory workers.
Seafood factory supervisors may also work on the factory line operating machinery, sorting, filleting, trimming, weighing, packing or freezing fish.
Skills & knowledge
- knowledge of fish processing, including fish trimming, packing and knife-handling
- knowledge of different kinds of fish and customer specifications
- understanding of hygiene and safety regulations in the factory
- good leadership and communication skills
- problem-solving skills
- record-keeping and time management skills.
Entry requirements
To become a seafood factory supervisor you need to have some industry experience working as a seafood factory worker.
Secondary education
There are no specific secondary educational requirements, but basic English and maths are useful.
Training on the job
Most skills are learned on the job. Seafood factory supervisors can complete unit standards towards different levels of the National Certificate in Seafood Processing while on the job.
