Marine Farm Operations Manager

Marine farm operations manager oversee and manage small vessels and crew. They are responsible for growing and harvesting fish, mussels, oysters or other shellfish in specially prepared areas.

Tasks & duties

plan and explain to the crew the work to be done
keep a record of hours worked
train, supervise and assess the crew
are responsible for the health and safety of the crew
order equipment and supplies
are in charge of minor engine maintenance
ensure the vessel is operated cost effectively to minimise downtime and cost
work alongside the marine farm workers

Marine farm supervisors may also do some of the following tasks, depending on the type of produce and whether they are responsible for farming, seeding or harvesting the produce:

prepare sacks, ropes or sea beds
scatter baby shellfish on prepared areas or fix them to hanging ropes
look after the growing shellfish or fish
manage the maintenance of marine farms
drive and navigate the boat.

Skills & knowledge

knowledge of growing and harvesting fish or shellfish
knowledge of local shellfish farm sites
management skills
communication skills
an awareness of health and safety practices
basic mechanical skills
boat handling and navigational skills, including the ability to read charts and use a compass
practical skills such as tying knots and splicing ropes.
skill using radars and electronic equipment
first aid skills.

Entry requirements

There are no specific requirements to become a marine farm supervisor. However, if you are working on a boat you must complete an Coxswain Certificate. A diving qualification may also be required if supervising farms where diving takes place.

Secondary education

School Certificate equivalent English and maths may be useful for becoming a marine farm supervisor.

Training on the job

Marine farm supervisors can complete unit standards towards a National Certificate in Aquaculture on the job.

Useful experience

Experience as a marine farm worker is important for marine farm supervisors. Experience on other boats and in other areas of the seafood industry may also be useful.
