Administrative Services
Most organisations have administrative staff, so you could work for a variety of employers including; trades and businesses, hospitals, schools and educational institutions, government departments, the armed forces and legal offices.
Advertising, Marketing and Sales
People working in advertising, marketing and sales jobs may; plan how to promote a product, or organisation’s image or services, survey people’s thoughts on products and services, plan and develop advertising campaigns or events for clients, communicate information to the public for an organisation, create the artwork or content for advertisements and sell goods and services.
Agriculture
Work in the agriculture industry may involve; cultivating land, and planting, caring for and harvesting crops, the care and management of farm animals to efficiently produce milk, meat and/or fibre, science and research, business management and contracting services to farmers.
Air Transport
Work in air transport jobs may include; piloting aircraft, customer service work, air traffic control aircraft maintenance, loading and refueling.
Animal Health
Animal health practitioners promote the health and welfare of companion animals and livestock, provide support to the agriculture industry.
Automotive Engineering
People working in the automotive industry may may work with vehicles such as cars, trucks, buses, bulldozers or motorcycles, or outdoor power equipment.
Building and Construction
Work in building and construction can involve building anything from fences or decks, through to houses, offices or hospitals. It also includes building, installing or maintaining parts of buildings such as insulation, plumbing, air-conditioning or electrical systems and interior fitting such as joinery, painting and decorating. People working in the industry can range from labourers through to qualified tradespeople, building contractors and management roles.
Business Management and Human Resources
People working in business management and human resources may be involved in; managing a business, organisation or project, planning and managing production in factories, staff recruitment, management, training and development, marketing and communications, industrial and employment relations.
Civil Engineering
Civil engineers plan, design and supervise the construction and repair of infrastructure such as buildings, roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water systems, wastewater treatment plants and wharves.
Community Services
Work in community services is focused on helping people of any age improve their life and quality of life. Areas you could work in include; social services, counselling, therapy or psychology, helping people with their personal development, caring for the elderly or people with disabilities, working with children and young people and religion.
Computer and Technical
Work in Computer and Technical jobs may involve; developing computer programs and applications, designing and maintaining websites and databases, solving computer problems and working with businesses to make sure their ICT systems suit their needs.
Customer and Cleaning Services
Work in customer and cleaning services jobs may include; cleaning homes, offices and buildings, vehicle grooming, dry-cleaning clothes or textiles, furniture packing and removal and working with customers.
Defence
People working in the defence industry work for one of three services; Royal NZ Navy, NZ Army and Royal NZ Air Force. Work may include keeping the peace in other countries, defending New Zealand against threats and providing key support during natural disasters.
Dental Services
People working in dental services jobs may; provide people with dental care, educate people about oral health and disease prevention, make or fit dental devices to treat, replace or protect teeth and assist dentists with patient care and running a dental practice.
Doctors
Doctors work to prevent, diagnose and treat disease, and physical or mental illness. They may also do research, teach or work in medical management roles.
Education
New Zealand's government-funded (state) and private education system is divided into three main areas; early childhood education, compulsory schooling, which is divided into primary and secondary schooling and tertiary education.
Electrical Engineering and Electronics Manufacturing
Electrical engineering and electronics manufacturing work may involve design, production and maintenance of electrical or electronics systems, equipment or components. This could include; systems that produce or distribute electricity, equipment that uses electricity, electronics equipment or components such as radios, televisions, computers, washing machines, or telecommunications systems.
Environmental Care and Waste Management
Work in environmental care and waste management includes; rubbish collection, recycling and cleaning streets, treating waste water, looking after areas such as gardens, parks or sports fields, and buildings such as schools, monitoring restaurants and workplaces to protect public health, controlling animal and plant pests and protecting the diversity of animals and plants in our national parks.
Environmental and Life Sciences
People working in environmental and life sciences study living things to help protect the environment, and improve health and nutrition. They undertake research and development in a range of areas, including; biotechnology, cell and molecular bioscience and biomedicine, ecology and biodiversity, environmental studies and marine biology.
Equine
Work in equine jobs may involve; training and breeding horses, exercising, feeding and caring for horses at stables, looking after horses’ health and thoroughbred racing (gallops) or harness racing.
Film, Television, Radio and Media
People working in the film, television, radio and media industry supply information, news and entertainment.
Finance, Accounting and Insurance
People working in finance, accounting and insurance jobs provide services to business and individuals such as; accounting and auditing, insurance, sharebroking, financial management and advice and banking.
Food and Beverage Manufacturing
Work in food and beverage manufacturing includes; producing fresh and processed food such as meat and cheese, winemaking and brewing, baking, research and development of new products and packaging products.
Forestry
Work in the forestry industry may include; working with indigenous (native) or commercial forests, planting, growing and maintaining trees (silviculture), harvesting commercial forests, planning and managing forests and conservation work.
Government
Government administration involves; urban, rural and emergency planning, developing and reviewing government or local authority policies, creating, changing and implementing laws and regulations. The work may be at an international, national or district level.
Hair, Beauty and Personal Services
Hair, beauty and personal care jobs may involve; hairdressing and barbering, giving people beauty treatments and services, massage, doing make-up for individuals and the film and television industry and doing body art.
Health Administration and Support
People working in health administration and support roles help with the day-to-day running of health services such as hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and care facilities, or medical centres.
Health Services
People working in health services jobs may; assess, diagnose and treat patients and clients, care for patients and clients in their home, a hospital, clinic or emergency, rehabilitate people who have specific injuries or disorders (for example, difficulty with speech or movement), care for and maintain hospital equipment, help people to prevent injuries and maintain their health and work in a laboratory or do research.
Horticulture
Horticulture roles involve; growing, harvesting, packing, grading and selling fruit, vegetables, flowers and seedlings, designing, building and maintaining gardens, parks or sports grounds, doing research to develop new crop varieties and providing information and advice about maintaining and improving the quality of crops.
Hospitality
People in the hospitality industry provide food, drink and accommodation for customers. They work in a range of settings such as; restaurants, cafés, grills and bistros; clubs, bars and pubs; resorts, lodges, hotels, motels and hostels; kitchens and dining rooms of public institutions and private companies.
Infrastructure
Work in infrastructure involves the planning, design, construction or repair of infrastructure such as; roads, pavements, bridges, tunnels, ports or airport runways, the generation, transmission and supply of electricity water treatment, distribution and drainage systems.
Languages
The field of languages is made up of a range of jobs that involve the study, translation, interpretation and teaching of languages. This can cover anything from sign language interpreting to work as a linguist at a university.
Law and Legal Services
Work in law and legal services roles may include; providing legal advice or support to people, mediating between parties, deciding the outcome of cases and administrative tasks like recording court proceedings.
Libraries and Museums
Libraries and museums work may involve; collecting, organising and looking after library materials, helping people research and access information, collecting, organising, and storing items of cultural or historic value, preserving and interpreting works of art and creating displays of cultural materials for the public.
Logistics, Trade and Warehousing
Work in logistics, trade and warehousing includes the buying, selling, distribution and storage of goods nationally and internationally.
Marine Construction
Marine construction involves building and refitting boats, which may include; pleasure craft, such as yachts, and super yachts. Work boats, such as fishing boats. Aluminium and fibreglass vessels.
Mechanical Engineering, Machinery and Equipment Manufacturing
Mechanical engineering, machinery and equipment manufacturing involves the design, production and maintenance of machinery, equipment, tools, mechanical systems and metal products.
Metal, Plastics, Glass and Chemical Engineering and Manufacturing
Metal, plastics, glass and chemical engineering and manufacturing involves processing raw materials into metal, plastics or glass, and producing chemicals that range from petrochemicals to fertilisers and pharmaceuticals.
Mining and Quarrying
The mining and quarrying industry is made up of a range of jobs involved in, discovery, and extraction, processing of materials, such as minerals, metals, aggregates and coal.
Nursing, Midwifery and Care
Nursing, midwifery and care jobs involve the assessment, treatment and care of patients in a hospital, clinic or their own home.
Performing Arts
People working in performing arts may; perform and present events, such as plays or concerts, to entertain or inform an audience, plan, direct or produce performances and do technical or hands-on work behind the scenes of a performance.
Physical Sciences
People working in physical sciences roles do research and investigation into a range of areas such as; physics, including areas like mechanics, matter and energy. Chemistry, including the make-up and behaviour of chemicals and materials, and chemical engineering. Astronomy and the Earth, and its geology, atmosphere, weather systems or processes.
Postal Services
People working in postal services may; collect mail from businesses and post boxes, deliver mail to homes, shops and business premises, sort mail at parcel processing plants and work in post-shops.

Printing involves the preparation, production, and publishing of printed material. This can range from newspapers, brochures, and books to a huge range of labels, bags, and boxes for consumer products.
Property Services
Work in property services may involve the; buying and selling of property, arrangement of finances for people buying property, development, valuation, rental and management of property and maintenance and upkeep of property.
Public and Border Protection, and Emergency Services
Work in public and border protection, and emergency services may involve; protecting or minimising harm to people, property and the environment, enforcing laws and regulations, monitoring New Zealand’s borders, dealing with emergency situations and working with and rehabilitating offenders.
Rail Transport
The rail transport industry involves the transportation of people and freight by trains throughout New Zealand.
Road Transport
People working in road transport jobs may; operate machines and vehicles, transport people or goods locally or nationally and teach others how to operate vehicles. They may work in many industries, such as manufacturing, building, tourism, forestry, agriculture or horticulture.
Sales, Retail and Customer Services
Work in sales, retail and customer services may include; selling goods to businesses for their use or to sell to customers, preparing goods to sell to customers, promoting and selling new and used goods to customers and managing a retail business.
Seafood
The seafood industry involves; harvesting fish from deep-sea or inshore fishing, aquaculture – growing and harvesting fish and shellfish in marine farms, and processing fish and shellfish (at sea or on shore).
Social Sciences
Social scientists conduct research, evaluate and analyse aspects of the world such as societies, cultures, people, human behaviour and the physical environment. Areas of social science include; archaeology and anthropology, history, economics and statistics, geography and demography and sociology and criminology.
Specialised Craft and Equipment Manufacturing and Repair
People working in specialised craft and equipment manufacturing and repair may produce or repair of specialist goods, machinery or equipment. This may include jewellery, musical instruments, optical instruments or sporting equipment.
Sport and Recreation
People working in sport and recreation jobs may; coach or train other people to develop their sport and recreation skills, organise or manage sport or recreation activities, work as professional sports people guide. And support or motivate people doing sport or recreation activities.
Surveying, Design and Planning
Work in surveying, design and planning involves preparing and developing plans, designs, maps and surveys for a range of purposes. This could include; designing and planning commercial products, urban areas or structures such as buildings or boats, survey
Telecommunications
The telecommunications industry involves developing and maintaining the systems, the lines, networks, and devices that enable people to talk via telephone or radio, and use the Internet.
Textile, Clothing, Footwear and Leather Goods Manufacturing
Textile, clothing, footwear and leather goods manufacturing involves the design and production of products ranging from carpets to designer clothing.
Tourism
People working in tourism jobs provide services for local and international travellers. Work in the industry may include; guiding people on tours or outdoor recreation activities, developing travel packages to sell to travel agents and helping people organise and book their travel plans.
Visual Arts, Design and Crafts
Visual arts and design jobs may involve; the design and production of artworks such as prints, carvings, paintings, textiles, pottery or weaving, cartoon art or signwriting, preparing art, images or graphic design for books or magazines and creating images or animation for film or television.
Water Transport
Water transport includes; international and coastal shipping, passenger services, services provided by port company workers such as harbour pilots or tug-boats and onshore work such as the loading and unloading of vessels.
Wood and Paper Product Manufacturing
People who work in wood and paper product manufacturing jobs help to turn logs cut from forests into timber, pulp or paper products. Work may include; planning and managing the production process, operating machinery, checking the quality of goods produced and maintaining machinery, tools and equipment.
Writing and Publishing
People working in the writing and publishing industry may research, write, publish and distribute news, information and entertainment. The type of work can include; creative writing, writing news or feature articles, writing technical manuals or helping people to understand complex information, design and layout of publications, in print and on the Internet and managing the production of publications.
