Cashier

Cashiers deal with payments made to or from an organisation such as a bank or shop.

 

Tasks & duties

Cashiers may do some or all of the following:

  • prepare accounts for payment
  • ensure the correct amounts are paid
  • record all payments
  • file records of accounts and payments
  • mail out statements and receipts to customers
  • organise and balance the till floats for each day, and follow up any variances
  • handle the petty cash
  • complete the daily banking
  • deal with financial enquiries and complaints
  • give financial information to the accountant
  • office administration

 

Skills & knowledge

Cashiers need to have:

  • knowledge of office and banking procedures
  • good communication skills
  • basic accounting and maths skills
  • record-keeping skills
  • computer skills

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to become a cashier, though some employers may prefer you to have studied accounting or computer studies.

 

Secondary education

There are no specific secondary educational requirements to enter this job, but School Certificate or NCEA equivalent maths is preferred.

 

Training on the job

Cashiers are generally trained on the job, under the supervision of a manager or senior cashier.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for cashiers includes:

  • work with money or numbers 
  • office work 
  • work involving customer service 
  • general computer experience
