Lighting Technician

Lighting technicians set up and operate lamps and other lighting equipment to provide light and special lighting effects in theatres, at events, and for film and television productions.

 

Tasks & duties

Lighting technicians may do some or all of the following:

  • study the script and consult with the director to assess what is required
  • discuss production requirements with the camera operator
  • select lights and equipment to be used and organise any additional equipment
  • set up the lights and equipment
  • choose and combine colours to achieve the desired effect
  • operate the lights during the performance
  • light each scene in television and film
  • maintain and repair the equipment
  • set up the frames and scaffolding for the lighting rig
  • operate the sound system
  • explore new techniques and special effects

 

Skills & knowledge

Lighting technicians need to have:

  • knowledge of lighting and set design
  • knowledge of lighting special effects, and the qualities of light and colour
  • creative ability to operate a lighting system
  • knowledge of the filming process, particularly different camera techniques if working in film or television
  • communication skills in order to relate to the director, performers and production crew
  • knowledge of safety procedures
  • technical skills, including electrical knowledge
  • organisational skills
  • planning skills

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to become a lighting technician, however a tertiary entrance qualification may be required to enter further training.

 

Secondary education

There are no specific secondary education requirements. Useful subjects include English, maths, physics, computer studies, design and workshop technology.

 

Tertiary education

A course in television, video or film may be useful.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. Lighting technicians may attend training courses.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for lighting technicians includes:

  • working backstage in theatres
  • working for a lighting hire and supply company
  • computer or electrical work
  • photography
  • work in the entertainment industry
  • production work in television or film
