Harness Driver
Tasks & duties

Harness drivers may do some or all of the following:

drive horses in harness races
-
meet with horse owners and trainers to discuss race tactics
-
put on and take off harnesses
-
groom and care for horses
-
exercise and train horses
-
help break in horses
-
clean stables
Skills & knowledge
Harness drivers need to have:
-
harness driving skills and knowledge of racing tactics
-
knowledge of horses and their behaviour
-
skill caring for and handling horses
-
understanding of horse racing rules and procedures
-
communication and listening skills
Entry requirements
To become a harness driver you need to work as a trainee for three years. Trainees are taught about all aspects of harness racing, with a combination of on-the-job training and block courses. This training leads to the National Certificate in Equine Practice (Harness Racing).
Secondary education
Harness drivers need to have at least two years of secondary education.
Useful experience
Any experience with horses is useful for harness drivers.
