Navy Communications Operator
Tasks & duties

Navy communications operators may do some or all of the following:
-
send and receive messages by radio, lights and flags
-
keep a log of messages sent and received
-
interpret messages and listen for distress signals
-
contact shore bases and ships to communicate information
-
broadcast weather reports and warnings
-
monitor the operation of equipment
-
maintain and make minor repairs to radio equipment
-
take part in shore patrols
-
do a variety of cleaning duties
-
assist in fire-fighting or other emergency procedures
-
assist in additional combat roles
Skills & knowledge
Navy communications operators need to have:
-
knowledge of radio communications and international radio procedures
-
knowledge of Morse code and flag signals
-
knowledge of interpreting coded messages
-
knowledge of how to use and care for radio equipment
-
knowledge of navy regulations and safety procedures
-
technical skills
-
skill in interpreting information
-
communication skills
-
keyboard skills and clear handwriting
Entry Requirements
To enter the Royal NZ Navy you must be at least 17 years old and have no criminal convictions. You also need to pass educational, medical and fitness tests.
To become a navy communications operator you need at least three years of secondary education. A pass in two School Certificate subjects, or NCEA equivalent, is recommended.
Tertiary Education
All Navy personnel have the opportunity to complete relevant part-time tertiary studies (fully paid for by the Royal NZ Navy) throughout their career.
