Army Movements Operator

Army movements operators load and unload ship or aircraft cargo, plan the transportation of people and equipment for operations, and pack equipment and supplies to be dropped by aircraft.

 

Tasks & duties

Army movement operators can work in terminal operations, movement control or aerial delivery.

Terminal operators:

  • load and unload cargo from aircraft, ships and trucks
  • drive trucks, fork-lifts and jeeps

Movement control operators:

  • plan and co-ordinate how to transport defence force personnel and equipment to domestic and overseas locations
  • discuss travel requirements with NZ Army staff
  • plan routes
  • book tickets and accommodation
  • consult with travel agents
  • arrange documents, customs clearance and insurance for imported and exported goods
  • make arrangements for transporting dangerous goods

 

Aerial delivery operators:

  • prepare and pack equipment and supplies to be dropped by aircraft
  • calculate loads and drop zones to ensure supplies are safely delivered
  • drop equipment and supplies from aircraft

 

Skills & knowledge

Army movement operators need to have:

  • knowledge of methods of transporting people and equipment
  • knowledge of geography
  • administration skills and knowledge of office procedures
  • communication skills
  • organisational skills
  • knowledge of NZ Army regulations
  • driving skills
  • computer skills
  • maths skills in order to calculate the factors involved in dropping supplies from aircraft

 

Entry requirements

To join the NZ Army you must be:

  • at least 17 years old
  • a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident staying in New Zealand for at least five years
  • have no criminal convictions for the previous two years
  • be medically fit for service

To become an NZ Army movements operator you need to have NCEA Level 1 (12 credits per subject) in English, maths and one other subject, or School Certificate equivalent.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. All NZ Army recruits need to complete the 12-week All Arms Recruit Course (AARC) at Waiouru Military Camp before training for their specific trade.

Army movements operators must complete these training courses:

Royal NZ Army Logistic Regiment (RNZALR) Corps Training Course to learn to drive all the vehicles required, including fork-lifts

Basic Movements Course to learn about working with aircraft and ships

After 18 months in the NZ Army, army movements operators do a Junior Movements Course to prepare them for more supervisory positions.

After two years' service, army movements operators are eligible to attend the Intermediate Movements Course, which provides further training.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for army movement operators includes training in the Territorial Force, office work and work as a dispatch/receiving clerk. Experience working in teams is also helpful.
