  • calculate, administer and process pay and allowances
  • process accounts
  • maintain and update NZ Army personnel files
  • carry out other human resource duties

Army administrators need to have:

To join the NZ Army you must be

  • at least 17 years old

  • be medically fit for service.

To become an army administrator you need to have NCEA Level 1 (12 credits per subject) English and maths, or School Certificate equivalent.

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. All NZ Army recruits need to complete the 12-week All Arms Recruit Course (AARC) at Waiouru Military Camp before training for their specific trade.

Army administrators then complete the basic administrator course, which covers software packages, data entry, the administration of travel, pay, allowances and leave; and working in a field environment. Once posted to an administration centre at a military camp, army administrators can gain qualifications in management, communications and business skills. They can also study university papers.

Useful Experience

Work experience using computers and keyboard skills is useful for army administrators. Experience working with people is also helpful.
