Systems Administrator

Systems administrators look after computer hardware (equipment), software (programs), computer networks (communication links between computers) and operating systems (programs that run computers).

 

Tasks & duties

Systems administrators may do some or all of the following:

  • install new hardware and software
  • find and fix hardware and software problems
  • set up computer networks and operating systems
  • ensure networks and operating systems are running smoothly
  • monitor access to computers and computer systems
  • maintain the security of an organisation's data and information technology (IT) systems
  • predict how much an organisation's IT systems will be used
  • liaise with hardware and software suppliers to purchase equipment
  • research and implement new technology
  • consult with other parts of an organisation such as the financial or policy section
  • train people to use the organisation's computer system or organise outside training programmes, particularly for new software

Systems administrators need to have:

  • up-to-date knowledge of new developments in computer systems and computers
  • an understanding of computer principles and protocols
  • an understanding of the effects new technology will have on their clients and their work
  • problem-solving and time-management skills
  • oral and written communication skills, listening skills, and the ability to understand and explain technical language

 

Entry requirements

To become a systems administrator you need to have a broad knowledge and practical understanding of computing and maths, and preferably a tertiary qualification in a technology-related field. An industry qualification or certification run by computer companies such as Microsoft and NetWare may also be useful.

 

Secondary education

A tertiary entrance qualification is needed to enter training. Useful subjects include mathematics, English and computer studies.

 

Training on the job

Systems administrators are required to undertake ongoing education and training, and must keep up to date with new technology by regularly reading publications and using the Internet.

 

Useful experience

Previous work with computers and computer operating systems, such as Netware, Windows or Unix, is useful for working as a systems administrator.
