Database Administrator

Database administrators design, build and maintain databases, which store data. They also monitor and repair databases to ensure they are always available for an organisation's use.

 

Tasks & duties

Database administrators may do some or all of the following:

  • design and build databases, which store an organisation's records for later use
  • ensure integrity of the data, that it is clearly designed, and remains consistent across the database
  • ensure that database information is always available to all users in a form that suits their needs
  • monitor the performance and security of the database, and minimise the risk of the database failing
  • monitor the growth of the database and plan its capacity
  • fix any database problems such as software failures, and provide database recovery after hardware failures
  • test new systems, commission and install new applications
  • tune and optimise the performance of databases
  • ensure that storage, archiving, backup and recovery procedures are functioning correctly
  • write database documentation, including data standards, procedures, and definitions

 

Skills & knowledge

Database administrators need to have:

  • in-depth knowledge of at least one database management system
  • a general understanding of computer operating systems such as Windows, NT or Unix
  • up-to-date knowledge of the latest computer technologies
  • good technical ability
  • planning and organisational skills
  • problem-solving skills
  • good communication skills

 

Entry requirements

To become a database administrator a tertiary qualification, such as a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in computing, or a degree in information systems or business computing, is recommended.

 

Secondary education

A tertiary entrance qualification is required to enter training. Useful subjects include computing, science subjects, English and maths.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. Some manufacturers such as Oracle and Microsoft have professional qualifications associated with their products. The certification process is highly regarded and may be obtained on the job.

 

Useful experience

Experience using computers and database management systems such as Oracle or Microsoft is useful.
