Technical Manager
Tasks & duties
Technical managers may do some or all of the following:

oversee projects

check daily on compliance with regulations

look at ways of improving the equipment so that production increases
-
analyse time lost through machines not working or technology failing
-
keep up with the latest technical developments and changes
-
provide guidance to the company's technical team
-
liaise with the production manager and inform staff of the latest developments
-
manage the personal development of staff
-
plan for the introduction of new technology
-
oversee the maintenance and repair of the plant and equipment
Skills & knowledge
Technical managers need to have:

business and administration skills

knowledge of finance and budgeting
-
technical writing skills
-
technical and analytical skills
-
planning and organisational skills
-
computer skills
-
communication skills, including being able to give and follow instructions
-
presentation skills
-
people skills, including being able to deal with conflict and difficult situations
Technical managers must also be skilled in evaluating the performance of staff and processes.
Entry requirements
To become a technical manager a tertiary qualification in engineering, such as a Australian Certificate in Engineering majoring in mechanical engineering is preferred. Management experience in a manufacturing process or product development is also needed.
Secondary education
A tertiary entrance qualification is needed to enter further training. Useful subjects include physics, chemistry, and maths with statistics and/or calculus.
Training on the job
Many skills are learned on the job and courses may be provided by the company. Technical managers can attend a range of courses to update their skills and knowledge, including personal development training and technical updating training such as Quality Assurance courses.
Useful experience
Useful experience includes experience in the industry you want to work in or project management experience.
