Roofer

Roofers repair or install roofs, using a variety of roofing materials such as roofing iron, tiles, butyl, and shingle.

 

Tasks & duties

Roofers may do some or all of the following:

  • measure the roof and mark out the work area
  • select and estimate the amount of materials to be used
  • carry the roofing materials up to the roof
  • attach the roofing materials to the structure
  • employ and instruct on safe work practices
  • remove the damaged iron, tiles or other materials from the roof
  • install spouting and downpipes
  • prepare quotes if running their own business

 

Skills & knowledge

Roofers need to have:

  • knowledge of roof construction and repair
  • knowledge of different roofing materials such as tiles, corrugated iron and butyl
  • the ability to read and interpret building plans
  • understanding of the New Zealand Building Code and the New Zealand Roofing Code of Practice
  • knowledge of health and safety
  • basic maths skills for measuring and cutting roofing materials to size
  • organisational skills

 

Entry requirements

To become a roofer you need to complete an apprenticeship and gain a National Certificate in Roofing. This involves a combination of on-the-job training and assessment, and three one-week block courses at the Waikato Institute of Technology over a period of up to two and a half years. Secondary education

Useful subjects include woodwork, maths and technical drawing.

 

Registration

The Licensed Building Practitioners scheme is being phased in between 2007 and 2011. This will require some roofers to become registered.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for roofers includes plumbing and any other work in the building and construction industry.
