Painter and Decorator
Tasks & duties

Painters and decorators may do some or all of the following:
-
discuss the requirements with the customer and/or builder
-
calculate the materials required
-
measure or estimate surfaces to quote a price for work on a new or existing building
-
select and purchase materials
-
remove old paint and wallpaper, clean and prepare the surface
-
repair cracks and damage to surfaces
-
may mix and match paint colours using a tinter (pure pigment similar to a dye)
-
apply paint using a variety of decorative methods
-
ensure all furniture items are protected with a cover
-
hang wall coverings such as wallpaper, vinyl or backing paper
-
use water-blasting or chemical cleaning on surfaces prior to painting
Skills & knowledge

Painters and decorators need to have:
-
knowledge of paints and wall coverings
-
skill in different painting and decorating techniques
-
understanding of how to prepare work surfaces
-
knowledge of health and safety precautions
-
knowledge of how to use and care for their equipment
-
good communication skills to be able to find out what their clients need
-
planning and organisational skills
-
basic maths skills for calculating decorating costs
-
good communication skills
-
problem-solving skills
Entry requirements
To become a painter and decorator you need to complete an apprenticeship and gain a National Certificate in Painting. This includes wall coverings, spray techniques, specialised coatings and industrial coatings.
Apprentices must do at least 6,000 hours of practical work, attend block courses and complete workbooks to be assessed. For further information contact the New Zealand Painting Contractors Association of Employers Industry Training Organisation Inc. (PDITO).
Secondary education
Three years of secondary education is recommended. Useful subjects include maths, English and art and design.
Tertiary education
Pre-employment courses in painting and decorating are available for those who are interested in taking up an apprenticeship. Many modules in these courses can count towards the apprenticeship.
Training on the job
Painters and decorators gain skills on the job. They can keep up to date with new painting and decorating techniques and health and safety procedures through Master Painters NZ Association Inc.
Useful experience
Useful experience for painters and decorators includes interior decorating, work as a sales assistant in a paint and wallpaper shop, work as a painter's assistant, or painting and decorating courses. Pre-employment training courses are also useful.
