Aluminium Joiner

Aluminium joiners make aluminium products such as doors and window frames.

 

Tasks & duties

Aluminium joiners may do some or all of the following:

  • discuss requirements with architects, builders and homeowners
  • provide quotes and price estimates
  • read the prepared drawings and plans for the required items
  • select, mark and cut the aluminium to size
  • screw aluminium pieces together
  • cut glass and glaze aluminium products
  • add timber joinery to the product
  • test the product for defects
  • arrange delivery of the finished or assembled product
  • repair and maintain aluminium products
  • deliver and install the finished product

 

Skills & knowledge

Aluminium joiners need to have:

  • skill working with aluminium, glass and timber
  • the ability to read plans and computer-aided design (CAD) drawings
  • practical skills
  • up-to-date knowledge of product trends and designs
  • problem-solving skills
  • communication skills
  • basic maths skills for making measurements and calculations

 

Entry requirements

These jobs do not usually require completion of secondary education, however further part-time study usually at Certificate III level, and on-the-job training offered as an apprenticeship, is required.

 

Secondary education

There are no specific secondary education requirements for aluminium joiners. However, three years of secondary education is recommended and useful subjects include metalwork, woodwork, English and maths.

 

Training on the job

Aluminium joiners are trained on the job by a supervisor or an experienced aluminium joiner. Some employers prefer you to complete an apprenticeship and gain a National Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for aluminium joiners includes work with aluminium or in the aluminium industry, or any other work in the building constrcution industry.
