Bicycle Mechanic

Bicycle mechanics service and repair bicycles.

 

Tasks & duties

Bicycle mechanics may do some or all of the following:

  • assemble new bicycles that are delivered to the bicycle shop
  • check bicycles before they go on sale
  • service and repair bicycles brought in by customers
  • advise customers about bicycle repair options, parts and accessories
  • update and maintain stock such as bicycle parts and accessories
  • do sales work and general shop duties such as answering the phone, serving customers and opening the shop
  • Experienced bicycle mechanics may work for professional regional or national cycling teams on tour

 

Skills & knowledge

Bicycle mechanics need to have:

  • knowledge of different bicycles, accessories and their components
  • a good understanding of how bicycles work
  • good mechanical skills to repair and service bicycles
  • good communication skills for dealing with customers
  • problem-solving skills
  • organisational skills to manage their day, as they may have to combine mechanic duties with shop duties

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific requirements to become a bicycle mechanic, as skills are gained on the job.

You can also complete an apprenticeship to become a bicycle mechanic and gain a National Certificate ll or III in Bicycle Workshop Operations.

 

Training on the job

Bicycle mechanics can attend courses run by bicycle manufacturers to develop their skills.

 

Useful experience

Useful experience for bicycle mechanics includes:

  • part-time work at a local bicycle shop
  • practise using mechanical equipment
  • work in a retail environment
  • helping out with bicycle clubs 
  • working at regional race meets
