Wool Presser
Wool pressers press wool into bales using their legs and feet and a wool-pressing machine.
Tasks & duties

Wool pressers may do some or all of the following:
-
place empty wool packs in wool-pressing machines
-
load shorn wool into the wool press
-
pack the press with wool
-
operate the press to push the wool down tightly to form bales
-
clip the bales closed
-
mark bales with numbers and other details
-
record details of bales in the wool book
-
remove the bales from the wool press area and stack them
-
fill the shearer's pen with unshorn sheep
-
keep the mobs of sheep separate
-
blend different types of wool
Skills & knowledge
Wool pressers need to have:
-
knowledge of how to operate and maintain wool-pressing equipment
-
knowledge of different wool types
-
knowledge of export packaging standards
-
excellent organisational skills
-
practical skills
-
animal-handling skills
-
basic maths skills
Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements to become a wool presser and most skills are learned on the job.
A driver's licence is useful.
Training on the job
Wool pressers may attend wool pressing courses.
Useful experience
Work with livestock or as a woolhandler is helpful, as is any shearing shed experience.
