Window Dresser/Visual Merchandiser

Window dressers/visual merchandisers arrange goods and make displays in shops, shop windows and at events to attract the attention of customers.

 

Tasks & duties

Window dressers/visual merchandisers may do some or all of the following:

  • discuss suggested displays with a client or management
  • research displays
  • make a sketch or model of the display
  • find or make the props for the display
  • locate supplies being displayed
  • assemble the display using a variety of materials
  • change signage and window displays regularly
  • take photographs of the displays and signage
  • basic maintenance of props and mannequins
  • purchase props from wholesalers on behalf of clients or management
  • administration and accounts work

 

Skills & knowledge

Window dressers/visual merchandisers need to have:

  • knowledge of how to assemble props and displays to attract the customers' attention
  • knowledge of different art techniques and materials, and fashion trends
  • knowledge of marketing and advertising
  • creative ability, and skill in drawing, designing and constructing displays
  • skills in maintaining props and mannequins
  • listening and communication skills
  • computer skills
  • planning and decision-making ability

If they are self-employed, small business management skills are also important.

 

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to become a  window dresser/visual merchandiser, but a tertiary qualification with subjects in visual merchandising, graphic design or fine arts is useful. 

 

Secondary education

There are no specific secondary educational requirements to become a window dresser/visual merchandiser. However, useful subjects include art, graphic design, woodwork and metalwork.

 

Training on the job

Skills are gained on the job. Window dressers/visual merchandisers also need to keep up to date with current trends by researching websites and publications.

 

Useful Experience

Experience in set design, drawing and painting, work in advertising or any creative work such as interior or graphic design, or photography may be useful.
