Telemarketing Representative
Tasks & duties

Telemarketing representatives may do some or all of the following:

use the telephone to take or make calls to customers
-
explain the product or service they are promoting to customers
-
raise funds or make sales over the telephone
-
ask people to pay their bills
-
keep records of interested customers and sales
-
follow up calls with a letter or further calls
-
make appointments for sales representatives
-
follow up on telephone messages left by customers
-
gather information about customers and conduct polls or surveys
-
update the company databases
Skills & knowledge

Telemarketing representatives need to have:
-
knowledge of the companies, products or services they call people about
-
knowledge of different sales techniques and how to approach people in ways that will invite them to answer
-
communication and listening skills
-
a good telephone manner and excellent customer service skills
-
time management skills.
Telemarketing representatives may need to have keyboard and data entry skills.
Entry requirements
To become a telemarketing representative, you need to have a good standard of English.
Secondary education
Requires at least Year 10 equivalent is preferred, although year 12 Certificate of Education or Higher School Certificate equivalent is also useful.
Training on the job
Telemarketing representatives are trained on the job. Employers may also send their staff on telemarketing courses.
Useful experience
Sales and customer service experience or any other work involving public contact is useful.
