Technical Sales Representative
Tasks & duties

Technical sales representatives may do some or all of the following:

visit clients
-
talk to clients about products and update product information materials

arrange equipment trials
-
sort out contracts and payment details with clients
-
arrange for delivery or installation of products
-
keep in contact with clients and answer their enquiries
-
arrange servicing of goods if they are faulty, even after they have been sold
-
find and contact potential new customers
-
advise management and staff of the clients' needs
-
keep sales records and write reports
-
organise sales budgets
-
predict future market trends
-
attend trade shows and conferences
Skills & knowledge

Technical sales representatives need to have:
-
sales skills, and a good knowledge of the products they are selling
-
knowledge of different sales and marketing techniques
-
good communication and presentation skills
-
negotiating skills
-
writing skills
-
basic accounting skills
-
knowledge of trading Acts and laws
-
organisational skills
Entry requirements
To become a technical sales representative you need to have experience in buying or selling, or customer service. Experience working with the products being sold may also be useful. You also need to have a driver's licence.
Secondary education
There are no specific secondary educational requirements but English, computer studies and maths to year 12 Certificate of Education or Higher School Certificate is preferred.
Training on the job
Skills are gained on the job. Technical sales representatives may attend company training courses, or sales courses, conferences and seminars on topics such as selling, negotiation or presentation.
