Advertising Sales Manager
Tasks & duties

Advertising sales managers may work for radio stations, newspapers and magazines (or their online service), and for websites. They may do some or all of the following:

co-ordinate sales and production for best results

ensure advertising prices are competitive

prepare sales plans and sell advertising

advise on ways to improve sales
-
ensure sales targets and staff deadlines are met

run daily or weekly sales meetings
-
consult with clients
-
hire and supervise staff
-
liaise with the public to get feedback about the radio station, newspaper, magazine or website
-
be involved with organising and selling events that are related to the radio station, newspaper, magazine or website such as promotional events

manage budgets, accounts and circulation

be involved in staff training
Skills & knowledge
Advertising sales managers need to have:

knowledge of the media industry, including the area they are working in

knowledge of advertising, promotions and marketing

an understanding of how businesses operate

up-to-date knowledge of specific technology used in the industry

skill in analysing clients' needs, including knowledge of how to use advertising to improve their business

Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements to become an advertising sales manager, but a proven and relevant sales record is often required to enter this job.
Secondary education
There are no specific secondary educational requirements but year 12 Certificate of Education or Higher School Certificate equivalent is preferred.
Tertiary education
A tertiary qualification in business or marketing is helpful.
Training on the job
Skills are gained on the job, and ongoing training courses are available in-house and externally.
Useful experience
Useful experience for advertising sales managers includes:

work involving sales or negotiating experience such as retail, marketing or public relations
