Advertising Account Manager
Tasks & duties

Advertising account managers may do some or all of the following:

maintain daily contact with agency clients
-
discuss ideas and work with an advertising account director
-
help account directors prepare advertising campaigns
-
prepare cost estimates and may present the agency's creative ideas to clients
-
pass on knowledge in key industry areas to clients
-
brief their creative and media departments
-
carry out more senior duties, depending on the size of the agency
Skills & knowledge
Advertising account managers need to have:
-
knowledge of the range of advertising and promotional methods available and how to effectively advertise clients' products or services
-
knowledge of the media and the best types of media to use for different advertising situations
-
understanding of market research
-
knowledge of how to target advertising to specific audiences
-
excellent communication skills for presenting and selling ideas to clients, and working with agency staff
-
analytical skills for determining clients' needs
-
writing skills
-
planning and time management skills
Entry requirements
To become an advertising account manager you need to have a relevant tertiary qualification.
Secondary education
A tertiary entrance qualification is needed to enter further training. Useful subjects include year 12 Certificate of Education or Higher School Certificate equivalent English, maths with statistics or economics.
Training on the job
Advertising account managers usually work under the direction of an account director and gain their skills on the job. They are encouraged to take courses to keep their skills up to date. This may include courses on improving their presentation skills.
