Storeperson
Tasks & duties

Storepeople may do some or all of the following:

receive and unpack incoming goods
-
check the quantity and quality of delivered goods
-
reject goods that do not meet specified standards
-
receive orders for goods
-
check that the correct goods are packed
-
send out the goods
-
send goods to be repaired
-
keep records of stocks and order more
-
check invoices for goods and keep records up to date
-
answer written and telephone enquiries
-
liaise with delivery companies
-
drive a fork-lift or use a palette-jack for lifting goods
-
keep the storeroom clean and tidy
-
are responsible for security in the storeroom
-
relieve other staff when required
Skills & knowledge
Storepeople need to have:
-
knowledge of the details of the goods they are handling
-
the ability organise goods efficiently in small and crowded spaces
-
good communication and people skills
-
basic keyboard and computer skills
-
practical skills
-
the ability to drive a fork-lift or pallet jack if working in a larger storeroom. Storepeople working with foodstuffs also need to be aware of health and safety issues about the handling and storage of chilled or perishable products
Entry requirements
There are no specific requirements to become a storeperson, although a heavy vehicle licence, OSH certification, or a fork-lift driver's licence may be required depending on the company you work for.
Secondary education
There are no specific secondary education requirements, but a basic knowledge of English and maths is preferred.
Training on the job
Skills are gained on the job. Many employers send storepeople on training courses and some provide fork-lift training.
