Dental Assistant
Tasks & duties

Dental assistants may do some or all of the following:
-
greet and prepare patients for treatment
-
mix materials for fillings
-
clean and prepare instruments
-
pass instruments and materials to the dentist as required
-
keep the patient's mouth clear by using a suction machine
-
develop x-rays
-
make moulds of patients' teeth
-
keep the clinic clean and hygienic
-
assist dental hygienists
-
perform reception and clerical duties, such as ordering dental and office supplies
Skills & knowledge

Dental assistants need to have:
-
knowledge of basic dentistry and hygiene
-
knowledge of dental practises to be able to anticipate the needs of the dentist
-
knowledge of dental materials and vocabulary
-
the ability to use and care for dental equipment, including sterilisation procedures
-
an understanding of dental surgery procedures, including the use of sedatives and anaesthetics
-
good people and communication skills
-
good organisational skills
-
basic computer skills
Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements to become a dental assistant, as they are usually trained on the job. However, the New Zealand Dental Association runs courses for dental assistants, awarding a Certificate of Dental Surgery Assisting on completion.
Secondary education
There are no specific secondary educational requirements, although three years of secondary education is preferred. Useful subjects include health, science and English.
Training on the job
The New Zealand Dental Association offers training courses through an online and workplace assessment system.
