Railway Shunter
Tasks & duties

Railway shunters may do some or all of the following:
-
break apart and join train carriages and wagons
-
direct engines in the yard where trains are put together
-
place wagons into sidings (railway parking tracks)
-
direct outgoing trains to the main line
-
prepare documents about the load on train wagons
-
answer customer enquiries about rail freight
-
conduct safety checks on trains
They may also work in freight distribution centres or move trains with remote control devices.
Skills & knowledge

Railway shunters need to have:
-
mechanical and practical skills for moving trains and freight carriages
-
knowledge of signalling, wagon types and classes
-
knowledge of the layout of railway yards, stations and lines
-
understanding of emergency and safety procedures, and first aid
-
knowledge of clients' freight requirements
-
organisational skills
-
communication skills and a good memory
Entry requirements
To become a railway shunter you must pass an entry test and a medical test that includes drug testing.
Training on the job
Skills are gained on the job. Railway shunters train at the Woburn Rail School and on the job. Extra training can be completed to learn advanced skills such as remote control operating.
Useful experience
Locomotive driving, work in the transport industry or other experience with heavy vehicles may be useful.
